| ABOUT RICAA
On April 5, 1995, two civil rights advocates
in Rhode Island, Joseph T. Fowlkes, Jr. (Past President of the
NAACP Providence Branch) and Gene L. Booth (Past Executive Director
of the Rhode Island Commission for Human Rights), co-founded
the Rhode Island Coalition for Affirmative Action (RICAA). They
convened a meeting of concerned Rhode Islanders to discuss the
potential impact of the national debate on Affirmative Action.
A series of six (6) follow-up meetings resulted in the formation
of RICAA.
The first RICAA election of officers designated Joseph
Newsome, former State Representative and Owner of the South Providence
Development Corporation (SPDC), and a retired teacher, Donna Fishman,
as Co-Chairpersons.
RICAA is a group of local civil rights advocates,
government officials, business leaders, educators, and concerned
citizens. The initial group of twenty-five participants has
expanded to over six hundred members who are all committed to
equity.
